S. Tiago Menor é o padroeiro da cidade e da diocese do Funchal. Celebrado com grande Solenidade no dia 1 de maio com o voto a São Tiago, uma promessa realizada pelos nossos antepassados e que consistia na procissão e missa ao padroeiro. No episcopado de D. Teodoro de Faria e de D. António Carrilho a procissão tinha o seu início na capela do Corpo Santo e terminava com a missa na igreja paroquial do Socorro. Com a entrada de D. Nuno Brás a procissão regressou aos tempos iniciais com a origem na Sé, depois da oração das Laudes, seguindo pelas ruas da cidade até à igreja paroquial do Socorro onde é celebrada missa solene e onde os vereadores da Câmara entregam a São Tiago as varas do poder. São Tiago Menor não foi escolhido, como padroeiro da diocese e cidade do Funchal, por ser de especial devoção dos madeirenses ou de especial devoção de algum dos senhores da Ilha ou de qualquer dos membros ilustres da sociedade funchalense de então. A escolha surgiu da necessidade de encontrar um padroeiro que nos protegesse contra a peste.

No séc. XVI a peste chegou a Machico e logo criaram uma cerca para conter a epidemia. Os barcos faziam quarentena para evitar que a peste chegasse ao Funchal. A população de Machico escolheu São Roque como protetor contra a peste. Finalmente e apesar de todos os cuidados a peste chegou ao Funchal e rapidamente alastrou-se pela população.

No "auto do voto", lavrado solenemente na Catedral, narra-se a escolha do padroeiro: foi escolhido à sorte, no dia 8 de junho de 1521, enquanto a cidade sofria uma grave epidemia de peste. Colocaram num barrete os nomes de Jesus, da Virgem Maria Nossa Senhora, de São João Baptista e dos doze Apóstolos, e um menino de sete anos, chamado João, retirou um dos papéis, depois de todos se colocarem de joelhos em oração e prometerem fazer uma casa em honra daquele santo que por sorte saísse. Quis Deus que fosse São Tiago Menor. Logo foi festejado por toda a cidade e, em julho desse ano, começou a construção da Capela do Voto, indo a cidade e os cónegos em procissão solene com o retábulo do Bem Aventurado Apóstolo.

Na renovação do voto, em 1523, na Catedral, diante do capitão Donatário, o Senado de então com seus vereadores, diversas entidades oficiais, todo o cabido e muito povo tomaram, juntos, o compromisso solene de em cada ano venerarem e festejarem São Tiago, com uma especial solenidade.

Por sua vez, no dia da procissão, em 1538, estando a peste a vitimar muita gente, o Guarda-mor da Saúde gritou em alta voz: "Senhor, até aqui guardei esta Cidade como pude; não posso mais, aqui tendes a vara, sede Vós o Guarda da Saúde." E largou imediatamente a vara, num gesto de entrega e de confiança nas mãos de Deus. E a peste desapareceu.

Por essa razão, e ainda hoje, os vereadores da Câmara Municipal do Funchal depõem as suas varas aos pés da imagem de São Tiago Menor e o Presidente da Câmara Municipal entrega aos pés do santo padroeiro as chaves da cidade.

S. Tiago Menor is the patron saint of the city and the diocese of Funchal. Celebrated with great solemnity on May 1st with the vow to Saint James, a promise made by our ancestors and which consisted of the procession and mass to the patron saint. In the episcopate of D. The choice arose from the need to find a patron saint who could protect us against the plague.

In the century. XVI the plague reached Machico and they soon created a fence to contain the epidemic. The boats were quarantined to prevent the plague from reaching Funchal. The population of Machico chose São Roque as a protector against the plague. Finally, despite all precautions, the plague arrived in Funchal and quickly spread throughout the population.

In the "vote record", solemnly drawn up in the Cathedral, the choice of the patron saint is narrated: he was chosen by lot, on June 8, 1521, while the city was suffering a serious plague epidemic. They put the names of Jesus, the Virgin Mary Our Lady, Saint John the Baptist and the twelve Apostles on a cap, and a seven-year-old boy called John took out one of the papers, after everyone got down on their knees in prayer and promised to do a house in honor of that saint who luckily left. God wanted it to be Saint James the Minor. It was soon celebrated throughout the city and, in July of that year, the construction of the Vow Chapel began, with the city and the canons going in a solemn procession with the altarpiece of the Blessed Apostle.

In the renewal of the vow, in 1523, in the Cathedral, before Captain Donatário, the Senate of the time with its councilors, various official entities, the entire chapter and many people made, together, the solemn commitment to venerate and celebrate Saint James every year , with a special solemnity.

In turn, on the day of the procession, in 1538, with the plague killing many people, the General Guard of Health shouted in a loud voice: "Lord, until now I have guarded this City as best I could; I can't do it anymore, here you have the rod, you are the Health Guard." And he immediately dropped the stick, in a gesture of surrender and trust in God's hands. And the plague disappeared.

For this reason, and even today, the councilors of the Funchal City Council lay their sticks at the feet of the image of Saint James the Minor and the Mayor hands over the keys to the city at the feet of the patron saint.
